目的　日本から海外へと移動した家族に焦点を当て、移動した家族がどのように地域社会の中で人間関係を築き、コニュニティーの一員として生活をしていくかというプロセスをインタビュー調査によって明らかにする。この研究では、長期に海外に滞在している家族（海外長期滞在家族）と、海外転勤をして海外生活を経験し帰国した家族（海外赴任帰国家族）を比較しながら、移動した後の人的ネットワークとその後の人的ネットワークの拡がりを分析した。
方法　海外に長期に在住する国際移動した4 家族（海外長期滞在家族）に対して2016年8月に、また海外転勤を何度も繰り返し帰国した4家族（海外赴任帰国家族）に対しては2017年9月に同様にインタビュー調査を実施した。インタビュー項目は移動後の問題とその解決、人的ネットワーク、帰国後の人的ネットワーク（海外赴任帰国家族）、帰国後の問題とその解決（海外赴任帰国家族）等について、半構造化インタビューを実施した。
結果　海外長期滞在家族と海外赴任帰国家族双方とも、海外への移動直後は現地の日本人ネットワークがある場合は、子どもの学校生活における問題解決や現地の生活の衣食住において有効に機能している。海外長期滞在者家族は、子どもの日本語や日本文化の保持について日本人ネットワークが長期に渡って維持されており、海外赴任帰国家族は、帰国後の子どもの日本の学校への適応について滞在中からネットワークの中で情報を収集している。

abstract

値

Aim: In this study, an interview survey was carried out to examine the ways in which Japanese families living abroad build relationships within local communities and become functioning members of those communities. We compare families living abroad for long periods (long-term international resident families) with those who were transferred abroad for work and later returned to Japan (transfer-andreturn families), and analyzed the human networks they formed after moving abroad and the later expansion of these networks.
Method: We interviewed four long-term international resident families in August 2016, and four transfer-and-return families in September 2017. Interviews were semi-structured and covered topics including problems encountered after moving abroad and their resolution, human networks formed after returning to Japan (transfer-and-return families), and problems encountered after returning to Japan and their resolution (transfer-and-return families).
Results: For both long-term international resident families and transfer-and-return families, when a network of other Japanese people was present immediately after they moved abroad, this network functioned effectively to resolve problems related to children’s school life, basic needs such as food, clothing, and housing, and other issues. Long-term international resident families maintained these networks for long periods in order to help their children retain Japanese language skills and Japanese culture, while transfer-and-return families utilized them to gather information about integrating their children into the Japanese school system when they returned to Japan.
