We used electromyographic analysis (EMG) and motion analysis to objectively measure load on the lumbar region in manual therapists during treatment to investigate whether adjusting the height of manual therapists’ hi-lo treatment tables reduces the load on their lumbar region.\nMethod: The subject practitioners in this study were manual therapists who apply pressure\nwith their thumbs. We used motion analysis for measurement in five subjects and EMG for measurement in nineteen of the subjects. The height of the hi-lo treatment table was set to five different levels using the formula “Therapist’s body height × 0.312 cm” as the baseline, which is considered in a previous study to be the most comfortable height for applying pressure to the patient’s lumbar region with their thumbs. We compared %MVC, perceived strain, and thoracic tilt angle for the five different hi-lo treatment table heights using the Friedman test. \nResults: %MVC for the erector spinae muscles at L3-level and perceived lumbar strain increased significantly when the hi-lo treatment table was lowered. Motion analysis found that thoracic tilt angle increased significantly when the hi-lo treatment table was lowered.\nDiscussion and Conclusion: The results suggested that when the manual therapists used a hi-lo treatment table at a height lower than “Therapist’s body height × 0.312 cm,” lumbar muscle activity and perceived strain increased.
