内容記述 | Recently inochi, meaning “life,” has become one of the subjects that teachers are required to teach in Japanese schools. The question remains: what does it mean to educate students about life? Inochi, in Japanese, is a concept, not an object or information that can be taught. Furthermore, it should be regarded as a function that connects the world and the self, making the self as alive as it can be. Therefore, the teaching of inochi will be feasible only in a moment where one can touch and feel life. Such a moment will be when one is aware that “life” is leading and teaching us. In other words, the subject to be taught is not about the person, but life itself. In this article, two examples are given in order to show this understanding of life. One is a Buddhist fable that explicates that a human life is equal to a life of other creatures. The other is an experimental class in an elementary school where students themselves killed chickens to eat so that they could learn that their own lives are based on other creatures’ sacrificing their lives. By reflecting on these examples, one can understand how learning about life could be composed of three phases: learning by the brain; learning by the mind; and the learning by the body. Understanding life must include learning by the body, which is one’s intuitive sense of living here and now. Learning by the body will lead to awareness of the totality of life. The author believes, then, that educational activities based on this awareness will, in turn, involve spiritual education, holistic education, and mindfulness training in the very near future. |
