| 値 | This paper attempts to reexamine the nature of Adam Smith's economic man and to show that he is not characterized by self-interest but the principle of sympathy. I. Smith assumes implicitly that mutual sympathy permeats all kinds of economic activities in The Wealth of Nations. 1. Exchange begins by preliminary mutual understanding of each one's needs. 2. Value of any commodity is judged by common estimate of the quantity of labour to produce it. 3. Market price is accepted as an impartial spectator's judgement of value. 4. Ordinary rates of wage, profit and rent are socially approved, so far as perfect liberty exists. II. The Theory of Moral Sentiments is to be interpreted as a general theory of human conducts, including an analysis of economic action. 1. Economic action is classified as an aspect of selfish action, resulting neither hurt nor benefit to others. 2. Health, external fortune and rank in society are the natural objects of selfish affections. 3. Material incentives originate with sympathy for the wealthy peopie who seem to have conditions to fulfil them. 4. Self-control by an impartial spectator within the breast is the general pattern of human behavior to which economic action belongs. |
