| 値 | The Requiem for Hokuju Rousen is a free verse poem by Yosa Buson, a famous painter and haiku poet of the Edo period, is a favorite of many. There have been various interpretations of this poem, but none have been accepted as the standard interpretation. In this paper, I focus on the roles of a pheasant in this verse and examine the former interpretations about the pheasant. Based on these I suggest as a likely interpretation that Buson identified himself with the wandering pheasant which had lost his friend. From this point of view, this, is the integration of the pheasant and the poet, I attempt a new interpretation of this verse. | |||||
