| 値 | "Ōmi-no-kimi" is an eccentric and laughing character in "The Tale of Genji". She appears in "Tamakazura-Jūjō" chapter in the middle of "Genji". Her father "Nai-daijin" who was called "Tō-nō-chūjō" at the beginning of this tale becomes a political rival to "Hikaru-Genji". "Ōmi-no-kimi" contrasts strikingly with "Tamakazura" who is the heroine of "Tamakazura-Jūjō" and is adopted as a daughter by "Hikaru-Genji". "Tamakazura" is elegant, but "Ōmi-no-kimi" is foolish. Her thoughtless speech and behavior embar-rasses "Nai-daijin" and his family. She is as ridiculous as "Suetsumuhana" who is a princess of "Hitachi-no-miya" family. This essay intends to discuss the background of her name "Ōmi-no-kimi" and to consider her function in this tale. |
