| 値 | Higuchi Ichiyoh was a famous woman of letters in the Meiji period. She wrote many diaries in her short life of twenty-five years. In her diaries, she wrote not only about her daily life, but also her thoughts inspired from reading books such as Makura-no-sohshi, Genji-monogatari. Classical literature in the Heian period plays an important part in Ichiyoh's literature, because she studied at Hagi-no-ya, a private school of Nakajima Utako. In her school, many high-society women studied the Japanese poem, Waka, and classical literature. Ichiyoh wrote of occurrences in Hagi-no-ya using citations from classical literature. Ichiyoh also cited Tsurezuregusa, a medieval essay written by Kenkoh-hohshi, in her diaries. For Ichiyoh, Tsurezuregusa was her desktop book. She was able to write many of her thoughts and feelings by attentive reading of Tsurezuregusa. This paper aims to point out the influence of Tsurezuregusa on Ichiyoh. |
