| 値 | The purpose of this paper is to describe the mechanisms by which women become prostitutes, and how a social structure based on inadequate women's rights allows this. In pre-World War II Japan, a lot of women became prostitutes in order to help their poverty-stricken families. Although the instance of people living in absolute poverty has decreased since W.W.II, cases of people living in relative poverty because of the misuse of credit cards or loans have been on the increase, especially since the 1970's. From an investigation into the life histories of the residents at a facility coming under the Prostitution Prevention Law, it has been found that most of the residents are living in relative, rather than absolute, poverty. They have been forced into prostitution in order to be able to repay loans. But why did these women become indebted? One of the reasons was the constant exposure to advertising and the pervasiveness of a consumerist culture. Moreover, in contemporary Japanese society, as in the pre-war period, traditional culture continues to deprive women of their rights. Thus we can see that the two main conditions conducive to prostitution are : traditional Japanese culture, and relative poverty. Prostitution is a problem affecting women's lives. This raises many issues relevant to social work practices, most specifically, how to resolve the problem of prostitution. |
