| 値 | The study of the economics of education was developed in the United States in the 1960s. It was immediately introduced to Japan by sociologists, rather than by economists. The focus of these scholars' research was the unique characteristic of the economic of education in Japan. This focus gave an interdisciplinary character to the research being carried out on this topic in Japan. This paper analyzes the background of this unique approach, while providing a survey of the main empirical research in this field. In particular it emphasizes the policy-oriented nature of Japanese research in this field. Researchers typically have tried to accomplish occasional tasks within a specific period of time. Researchers focused on educational demand and on the graduate labor market, with few researchers choosing to analyze the school educational system itself. Researchers in this field seldom used such tools of economic analysis as educational production function. This policy-oriented approach produced fruitful findings, but did not encourage theoretical development. Most research involved application of the human capital theory directly to Japan, with few researchers considering the Japanese situation in a broader perspective and revising their theories according by. We need more viable and particularized theories of the economics of education to develop this field of study in Japan. That is the task facing the younger generation of Japanese researchers. |
