| 値 | This essay is an inquiry into the nature of economic institutions. These institutions include markets, firms, and money. Traditional institutional economics defines "institution" as a "habit of thought," "collective action," or "social custom." These definitions have certain common elements, implying that institutions mediate between individuals and society. The question is why these economic institutions exist. There are a few reasons as a whole. The first reason is the existence of uncertainty in our economic activities. Our economic life broadly involves uncertainty, as complexity in society, and unsettled affairs in an individual context. The second reason is that people seek "order" in the economy, which develops the perspective of one's individual future. These institutions do not exist in a static state, but in a dynamic one. It is very important to investigate the aspects of these institutional changes. They occur relative to the fluctuations of society and individuals. We must pay attention to this aspect, as seen in the context of only Institutional Economics, but also that of other schools, such as the Austrian School. |
