| 値 | Sustainable development, and the interdependence of the economy and the environment, are increasingly important concepts to policy makers around the world. In the global context, it is argued that the poor are responsible for a very small share of pollution. However, the rich, who cause more pollution, have means to protect themselves from much of the worst effects. For instance, the energy consumption per capita in a low－income country like Bangladesh is less than one - tenth of that of developed countries. In the context of global environment destruction, it seems that agricultural and rural problems which both developed and developing countries face are attributable to certain issues in common. This paper is an introduction to our attempt to clarify the issues through a comparative description of agricultural development in Southern and Southeastern Asia. It is noted that sustainable development is an economic concept which bases its norm on a certain community or organization. Environmental and ecological sustainability can hardly be achieved without sustainable development. |
