値 | Yūteihisho (The Secret Book of Court Play) is a book on Kemari or Shukiku of the Kugemari Mikohidari School, which was compiled in or around the mid-14th century. It describes general features of Sukiku such as the playing-field, equipment, costumes, manners, and techniques. The book contains a little less than 20,000 letters, making it relatively short for a book of this sort. However, it is one of the relatively well-known works on Shukiku because it was included in the Gunshoruiju (The Collective Book Series). Purpose of this study: There are iwo candidates for the editor of the book, Mikohidari Tamesada (1293~1360) and Tamesada's cousin, Nijo Tameaki (1295~1364). The most prestigious index of Japanese bibliographies, Kokusho-Sōmokuroku, includes a note saying "some claim the author is Nijo Tameaki", but formally describes the work as written by Mikohidari Tamesada. This study intends to cast light on the identity of the author through investigation of a series of traditional versions of the book. Restlt: So far, author has examined fifteen versions of the book, other than those included in the Ganshoruiju. Eight of them are listed in Kokusho Sōmohuroku. Generally, these versions can be categorized into two groups. One category is a collection of work descended from the one included in the Gunshoruiju. Others are variations of an edition in the National Diet Library, referred to as the "Meireki Editions". The former group are considered to be the works of Tamesada. Those of the latter group are thought to be the works of Tameaki or his younger brother, Tametada(1310~73), who may in fact be more likely to have been the true editor. There is no appreciable difference between the contents of the editions in the two groups. Editions from both groups are based on the Mikohidari family's traditional game theory and records on Shukiku. These fundamental writings had been extant for as long as a full century since Tameie(1200~75) first founded the school. The oniy difference between the works of two groups are the specific cases they refer to. The reason for the origin of the two variations might be speculated as having been the result of conflicts that developed in the Mikohidari family in that period. |
