| 内容記述 | R．S．トマス（Thomas，1913-2000）は英国国教会の牧師としてウェールズに暮らし、そこに広がる自然と生きる人々を見つめ続けた詩入である。トマスの詩の中で繰り返し登場するイアゴ・プリサーチ（Iago Prytherch）はトマスの信仰をウェールズの自然と生活の中に体現させた「原型（prototype）」であろう。彼の詩的空間は自我を超越し宇宙へと無限に広がる拡張的なものではなく、啓示的ではあるが現実性を失っていないウェールズの原自然的世界なのである。それはむしろ限定的で狭量なものなのだ。しかし、それでいて最後には「神」の存在が垣間見える。本論考ではR．S．トマスの詩の中で荒涼たる土地を耕すウェールズの農民を「反牧歌」を乗り越えた原自然的農耕詩として位置づけながら、それがいかなる宗教的な意味を担っているのかを問い直す。 | |||||

| 値 | We often encounter a Welsh peasant named Iago Prytherch in R. S. Thomas's poems. He appears as a comical, even satirical representation of the rural agricultural life in the Welsh countryside, but in fact, he is a 'prototype' of humanity who travels through human history and thus represents what Thomas considers as the fundamental basis of religious faith. The world he lives in is the kind of hard primitivism which does not expand into universe, but takes its deep and real root in the severe natural environment of the Welsh hills, where he has to endure and survive in ominous silence, waiting in vain for a moment of divine revelation. The landscape depicted in Thomas's religious poems cannot be categorized as what Raymond Williams calls 'Counter-Pastoral'. I should like to explore its religious implications and modern significance by considering the uniqueness of Thomas's poems in the tradition of the so-called 'Counter-Pastoral' poems. | |||||
