| 内容記述 | 1839（天保十年）年６月、長者丸という名の難破船が太平洋でアメリカの捕鯨船に救助された。救助された７人はハワイに送られたが、そこで船頭の平四郎が死亡した。生き残った６人の乗組員はハワイで1840年まで生活した後、1843年に日本に帰還した。ハワイでの彼らの生活は、日本側（『蕃談』『時規物語』、その他）・アメリカ側（メアリー・シャルロッテ・アレクサンダ－の『ラハイナのボールドウィン博士』第10章に所収）に記されている。驚いたことに、これらの資料は遭難前の乗組員たちの日本での生活や遭難後のハワイでの生活の記述において、非常によく一致している。いくつかの記述は、双方の欠を補うものである。そこで、アレクサンダ－の書の第10章を日本語に訳して、これに日本側の資料に基づき、注を付けることにした。 | |||||

| 値 | In June, 1839, a wrecked Japanese trade ship, named Choujamaru, was saved by an American whale ship in the Pacific Ocean. Seven survivors were transferred to Hawaii, but there, the captain was dead. Six sailors lived there till 1840, then, returned to Japan in 1843. Their lives in Hawaii were recorded, both on Japanese side ("Bandan", 1849, "Tokei-monogatari", 1849, and other literatures), and American side (collected in the 10th chapter of Mary Charlotte Alexander's "Dr. Baldwin of Lahaina", 1953, Berkeley, Cal.: Stanford University Press). Surprisingly enough, these literatures on both sides coincide well about the descriptions of the sailors' lives in Japan before the accident and their lives in Hawaii after the accident. Several descriptions supply the lack of the Japanese or American material. So, I translated the 10th chapter of the Alexander's book into Japanese, and annotate it with Japanese literatures. | |||||
