Subjects performed cardio-pulmonary exercise testing with an expiratory gas analyzer and surface electromyography to evaluate the tested muscle activities during ramp exercise. The examined muscles were quadriceps femoris muscles such as the vastus lateralis (VL) and the rectus femoris (RF) in the young group while the biceps femoris long head (BF) and gastrocnemius lateral head (GL) which antagonist muscles of quadriceps femoris were added in the elderly group. As a statistical analysis, pre and post slope values were compared in each muscle to verify the validity of the calculated EMGT. Next, the EMGT appearance time which verify their validity and the VT point time. Each EMGT time was expressed relative to the VT point time (with the VT point considered 100%). For all tests, a p value \u003c0.05 was considered statistical significant.\n[Results]In the young group, the increase in the slope of regression line for VL (pre slope: mean 0.072±standard deviation 0.082, post slope: 0.236±0.266, p\u003c0.01) and RF (pre slope: 0.015±0.013, post slope: 0.119±0.110, p\u003c0.01) were significantly increased after EMGT. The EMGT appearance times for VL (129.5 ± 28.2%, p\u003c0.05) and RF (132.8 ± 28.8%, p\u003c0.05) were later than the VT point (100%). In the elderly group, the increase in the slope of the regression line for VL was significantly decreased after EMGT (pre slope: median 0.071 (interquartile rage: 0.049), post slope: 0.030 (0.021), p\u003c0.01) while BF (pre slope: 0.003 (0.002), post slope: 0.937 (0.098), p\u003c0.01) and GL (pre slope: 0.001 (0.001), post slope: 1.118 (0.249), p\u003c0.01) were increased. The EMGT for RF was not valid because the slope after EMGT was not significant as compared to that before EMGT (pre slope: 0.007 (0.009), post slope: 0.009 (0.017)). The EMGT appearance times for VL (54.2 ± 20.9%, p\u003c0.0001) and GL (68.4 ± 26.2%, p\u003c0.05) were significantly earlier than the VT point (100%). There were not different in the EMGT appearance times among three muscles. \n[Conclusions] These results suggest that the increase in the slope of the regression line after EMGT for VL was blunted, possibly indicating delayed muscular fatigue in VL as agonist of pedaling resulting from the activation of BF and GL as biarticular antagonists. This recruitment pattern might be an elderly-specific strategy.
