It is now estimated that close to eighty percent of English speakers around the globe are in fact non-native speakers. Over the last decade, numerous linguists have sought to identify the core pronunciation features that occur when English is used as a lingua franca and have stressed the importance of teaching language rhythm, stress and sound in classrooms and textbooks. However, pronunciation seems to be one aspect of language teaching that is surprisingly neglected or in many cases completely ignored. This may be due to the perceived difficulty involved in its adequate instruction or the conclusion that it is unnecessary, or that it a ranks lower in importance to vocabulary acquisition and/or grammar proficiency. This paper highlights the importance of sound and consistent pronunciation practice and also provides methods on teaching key aspects including assimilation, inflections, intonation, phonemes and the phonemic script itself in lessons. Abstract | ||||||
English is currently the most common lingua franca throughout the world. It is now estimated that close to eighty percent of English speakers around the globe are in fact non-native speakers.
