内容記述 | The Supplement to the Course of Study for Social Studies in Elementary Schools, 1948 was compiled as a supplement to The Tentative Course of Study for Social Studies I, 1947, the compilation of which was due to the proposal of Helen Heffernan, Elementary Schools Officer of Civil Information and Education Section. But before this book was compiled, The Practical Side of How to Develop a Unit of Work for Social Studies, 1948 was also compiled under Heffernan's guidance. Both these books explained how to develop "a Unit of Work" in social studies, but they had some differences in the developing method. These differences were caused by the difference of the interpersonal relationship between Heffernan and their compilers, and the difference of their compilers' interpretation of social studies. The Practical Side which was faithful to Heffernan's guidance showed the possible ways to promote a child's understandings, critical thinking skills, and desirable attitudes steadily. On the contrary, The Supplement which was more faithful to the view of social studies in The Tentative Course of Study than to the guidance of Heffernan assumed that a unit of work for problem-solving study would naturally develop a child's ability. So the developing method in The Supplement showed no clear aims for promoting understandings, critical thinking skills, and desirable attitudes. However, many Japanese concerned with social studies acknowledged the method of The Supplement as a typical method for developing a unit of work. As a result, The Supplement put the early years of Japanese experimental approaches to social studies in a complex and difficult situation. | |||||||||||
