日本の民俗学は柳田國男のほとんど独力によってその全体像が作られたと言っても過言ではない。従って、民俗学のどの分野をとってみても、柳田國男の研究成果が大きく聳え立っており、現在なお多くの研究分野は柳田國男の学説に依存している。民俗学の研究成果として高く評価されることの多い子供研究も実は大部分が柳田國男の見解を言うのであり、柳田以降の民俗学を指してはいない。そのような高く評価され、実証済みの事実かのように扱われる柳田國男の見解を整理し、問題点を指摘し、それに続いて柳田以降の民俗学の研究成果も検討した。
柳田國男の子供理解は大きく二つの分野に分けられる。一つは子供の関係する行事や彼等の遊びのなかに遠い昔の大人たちの信仰の世界を発見するものである。子供を通して大人の歴史を明らかにする認識である。これは手段として子供を位置づけていることになる。この子供を窓口にして大人の過去を見る場合は、「神に代りて来る」という表現に示されるように、例外なく信仰、さらには霊魂観と結びつけて解釈している。もう一つの柳田の子供研究の世界は「群の教育」という表現に示される。群の教育は近代公教育を批判するものとして注目され、教育学系統の人々から高く評価される視点であり、柳田以降にもほとんど疑われることなく継承されてきた。しかし、この視点は子供を教育の対象と見るもので、大人にとって望ましい一人前に育てる教育に過ぎない。
民俗学はこれら柳田國男の呪縛から解放されなければ新たな研究の進展は見られないことは明白である。子供を大人から解放して、子供それ自体の存在を分析し、子供を理解することによって新たな民俗学の研究課題は発見されるであろう。

It is no exaggeration to say that the whole image of Japanese folklore study was established almost solely by Yanagita Kunio. Therefore, in every field of folklore, the results of Yanagita's studies rise high, and studies today in many fields still depend on his theories. Folkloric studies of children, which are often rated highly as the results of Yanagita's researches, are, in fact, Yanagita's opinions, and do not point to folklore studies after Yanagita. The author in this paper puts in order Yanagita's opinions, so highly rated and virtually taken as if proven fact, points out some problems, and examines the results of research in post-Yanagita folklore study.
Yanagita's understanding of children can be classified largely into two fields: One sees in childish events and play, an ancient world of adult worship; it is a recognition that adult history can be clarified through children. This treats children as a tool. This stance of seeing the past of adults through the medium of children is interpreted, without exception, in connection with worship, and with the concept of soul, as shown in the expression “come in place of god”. Yanagita's other world of studies on children is shown in the expression, “group education”. Group education drew attention as a criticism of modern public education. It was a viewpoint assessed highly by people in the domain of pedagogy, and it has been handed down since Yanagita from generation to generation, with hardly any doubts. However, this viewpoint regards children as objects for education, meaning simply an education to raise children into the kind of grown-ups the adults want them to be.
It is evident that no new developments in research can be made unless folklore study is released from these spells of Yanagita Kunio. It is only by releasing children from adults, by analyzing the existence of children themselves, and by understanding the children, that we may be able to discover new researches themes.
