To examine whether metabotropic glutamate receptors (mGluRs) play a role in the induction of LTP and/or LTD, an antagonist of mGluRs, (RS)-α-methyl- 4 -carboxyphenylglycine (MCPG), was administered to visual cortical slices obtained from young rats ( 20-30 days postnatal). MCPG blocked LTD, but was ineffective against the induction of LTP in most of slices tested.
