This lack of awareness and experience in productive phonological skills in early foreign language education hinders learners\u0027 further development, not only in speaking, but also other basic language skills, especially at the university level where productive oral proficiency and intelligibility are newly emphasized. In this exploratory study, 378 oral English students reported fairly strong values of pronunciation practice and of attaining native-like proficiency. They perceived phoneme-level segmental features to be as important as suprasegmental word and sentence-level features to intelligibility.
