Influences from Ozawa’s tadagoto-uta can be clearly seen in Rengetsu’s plainly written wakas. Rengetsu memorized Ozawa’s waka – a fact that was noted even in news about Ozawa himself. She is also known to have been extremely mindful of his essays on tanka. \nThe term “tadagoto-uta” was first used in an essay on tanka in the preface of Kokin Wakashu by Tsurayuki Kino, a prominent poet from the Heian period (794-1185). The term then became a key concept in Ozawa’s essays on tanka as Ozawa developed his own theories that defied the traditional Nijo poetic school. At the time, Japanese classical scholars rejected Kokin style waka and respected the Manyo style. Ozawa rebelled against this trend, primarily writing tadagoto-uta influenced heavily by Kokin Wakashu.\nA waka cannot be created simply by stringing together words with the correct number of syllables. Rengetsu’s waka is at times as accessible as prose while still embodying the necessary qualities of waka.
