内容記述 | Jinkôin is a Shingon temple located in the Kita ward of Kyoto. Kamo Yoshihisa, the head priest of the Kamo-wakeikazuchi Shrine, established the temple at the beginning of the 13th century. The author conducted a survey of the Standing Image of Yakushi Nyorai at the temple in October 2010. This article presents basic data on this previously little-known image and considers the background of its creation. In terms of style, this sculpture dates back to the early Heian period, namely the first half of the 9th century. Meiji period documents indicate that the sculpture was moved from Kamo-wake-ikazuchi Shrine to Jinkôin during the Meiji period separation of Buddhism and the Shinto faith. Further detailed exploration of the sculpture's provenance reveals the strong possibility that prior to its positioning at Kamo-wake-ikazuchi Shrine, the image was enshrined in the Yakushido hall located in Okamoto-chô, one of the districts where the shrine priests lived, close to Kamo-wake-ikazuchi Shrine. The details of the building of the Yakushidó hall, also known as the Okamotodo, are recorded in the ShokuNihon-kôki, an official history produced by the imperial court. This document indicates that the Okamotodô was established in the early 9th century for the deity Kamo by the peasants who fell under the auspices of the Kamo-wakeikazuchi Shrine. In other words, this image, which may have been enshrined in the Okamotodô, can be considered to be a Buddhist sculpture made for the Shinto deity Kamo. At the time, the syncretic Shinto-Buddhist philosophy was spreading, incorporating the belief that the power of Buddhas was required to enhance the power of Shinto deities. This article thus considers this image to have been created as part of the new syncretic Shinto-Buddhist belief system that was spreading in Japan during at the beginning of the Heian period, or the early 9th century. |
