While I agreed with the premise of the exhibition, when I first saw the diversity of works presented in the exhibition, I was dazzled by the massive range in the works, and was forced to reconsider my ideas on what constitutes Modernism in Asia, what is “modern” in Asia, and indeed, what kind of period is indicated by the term “modern” in this region. I addition, this exhibition proved thought provoking for me in another regard. As one of the specialists researching the history of modern art in Japan, I have been considering solely the dipartite relationship between Japan and Europe in closed system.
