内容記述 | The central image of Tōji temple's Bishamondo(東寺毘沙門堂) is a standing figure of the deity Bishamonten (毘沙門天, Vaiśravaņa). Unlike other images of Bishamonten, this sculpture is known as the Tobatsu Bishamonten (兜拔毘沙門天) and is known to have been originally enshrined on the Rajōmon Gate of Heian-kyo (平城京羅城門). However, the true nature of the Tobatsu form of Bishamonten is not yet fully understood, nor is the reasoning behind its enshrinement in the Heian-kyo Rajōmon Gate. This article will consider these fundamental issues related to the Tōji Bishamonten image, and will explain why the author concludes that the statue was brought to Japan from Tang China in the 9th century by Saichō (最澄), and that it was enshrined in the Rajomōn Gate built by the Emperor Kanmu (桓武天皇). These considerations take particular note of the fact that the Heian-kyo Rajomon Gate was extremely large, larger in scale than the Rajōmon Gate of Heijo-kyo (平城京羅城門), and also larger than the Mindemen Gate (明徳門) in the Tang capital of Chang'an(長安). The so-called Tobatsu Bishamonten image depicts a particular iconography of the deity which was worshipped in Khotan, Eastern Turkestan, where images of the deity were enshrined in a wooden turret (木楼). This allows us to understand that the placement of the Tōji image in the massive Rajōmon Gate was in accord with the original enshrinement procedures for Tobatsu Bishamonten images in Khotan. This article goes on to assert that Khotan images of Tobatsu Bishamonten were transmitted from Khotan to Tang China where their iconography changed into two recognizable styles, a MidTang (中唐) style and a Late Tang (晩唐) style. The Tōji image can be identified as an example of MidTang style, and the author has determined that the Tōji Bishamonten was brought to Japan prior to the return of the monk Eun (恵運) who traveled to Tang China in 847. Because Saichō had an image of Tobatsu Bishamonten built at Mt. Hiei (比叡山) around 818, an image which has almost the same characteristics as the Tōji image, the author concludes that it was Saichō who brought the Tōji image to Japan. |
