内容記述 | This work, which has been presented to the Tokyo National Research Institute of Cultural Properties, is an oil painting on wooden board and bears the artist's dated signature which reads “2 Août 1899 Yukiko Jūissai (Yukiko, Eleven Years Old) S-K”. The model, Yukiko, was his niece, the second daughter of his elder sister, Chiga. It was contributed to the fourth Hakubakai Exhibition in 1899 with the title of “Girl” and received favourable comments from newspapers. The colours are limited and broad touches are used for other parts than the face. The quick but flexible brushwork grasps the human form precisely. The work has some interesting characteristics. First of all, the use of an oval format is exceptional among KURODA's oeuvres. The artist might have aimed at the effect of a mirror. Relevant to this, it was also rare for KURODA to render the figure with eyes distinctly cast outward from the picture plane as in this painting. On the other hand, the background of this sharply delineated portrait is treated in an abstract fashion, thus showing his new concern for the employment of decorative elements in a realistic mode. Though small in size, this is a suggestive hint for probing typical aspects of his most energetic period. |
