Our present goal is to survey all pre-Meiji painting and sculpture in North American collections. The results of the survey will be published eventually in the form of comprehensive, bilingual (English and Japanese) catalogues, classified by collection. In these catalogues, only one photograph of each work, together with a brief description (artist, size, medium, date, etc.) will be printed. Therefore, we have decided to publish on an occasional basis in this journal, longer and a more detailed reports on selected objects which we were able to examine on site.\n In the present issue, we introduce two sculptures, from the collection of The Metropolitan Museum of Art, a seated Amida (Amit\nābha) and a standing Jizō (Kșitigarbha).
