It acted as a stimulus for the export of Japanese crafts and the import of the technique of western craft, along with organization of national exhibitions, and the word bijutsu was introduced as the translation of “art” for the first time. The list of objects which were exhibited by Japan in this exhibition, can be found in the CATALOG DER KAISERLICH JAPANISCHEN AUSSTELLUNG published in German, by the Exhibition Bureau of Japan, in which listings are simple object names and occasionally manufacturers. The Japanese catalogue drafts stored in the Tokyo National Museum, which was the former Exhibition Bureau are more detailed in description, thus valuable as research material. There is no published catalogue in Japanese. Therefore, the author has created a database selecting the listings of art and craft objects, as a part of the research on literary materials of Expositions undertaken by the Modern and Contemporary Japanese Art Section of Tokyo National Research Institute of Cultural Properties.\n Listings from the catalogue drafts of the following classifications were selected for the database: \n Group VI - Leather and India-Rubber Industry \n Group VII - Metal Industry \n Group VIII – Wood Industry \n Group IX – Stone, Earthenware, and Glass Industry \n Group X - Small Ware and Fancy Goods \n Group XII - Graphic Arts and Industrial Drawing \n Group XV - Musical Instruments \n Group XIX – The Private Dwelling House, its Inner Arrangement and Decoration \n Group XX – The Farm House, its Arrangements, Furniture, and Utensils.\n Group XXIII— Art applied to Religion \n Group XXIV— Objects of Fine Arts of the Past, exhibited by Amateurs\nand Owners of Collections \n Group XXV — Fine Arts of the Present Time, works since the second London Exhibition of 1862\n In this issue, the listings will be in the order they originally occur. However, utilizing the database would be convenient for research, such as retrieving information from the computerized data, or sorting lists in the order of artist, place of manufacture, and name of object, especially for the Vienna Exhibition catalogue where the same type of object is exhibited in various classifications. Furthermore, by creating a database with data from various exhibitions, it is possible to list the records of each artist who participated.
