内容記述 | Many versions and variations of Handscroll Painting of Thirty-six Celebrated Poets were produced in and after the Kamakura Period based on the idea of “thirtyofthirty-six celebrated poets” whom FUJIWARA no Kintō (966-1041) selected from different periods and of whom Kinto compiled an anthology Sanjūrokunin Sen. The earliest remaining examples are from the thirteenth century, one of which is the well-known Satake Version. They were primarily made as a handscroll or a set of two handscrolls but many of them were cut into sections and remounted as hanging scrolls in later periods. This is the case with the Satake Version, Agedatami Version, Narikane Version, Gotobain Version and Tameie Version. The work introduced here is an exampled which retains its original scroll form. In this piece every two figures are paired and depicted facing each other as if they were performing the traditional poem contest. The Poems written beside the figures are not quoted from Kintō's Sanjūrokunin Sen but are taken from various sources, a point which is one of the characteristics of this version. The figures of the poets are painted in the same form as in Jidai Fudō Utaawase E (Poets from Different Periods and Their Poems), the most voluminous handscroll painting of “celebrated poets” among those preceding the piece introduced here. The date is presumed to be the end of the Kamakura Period or the first half of the fourteenth century judging from the painting style and the style of calligraphy which the tradition from the Edo Period attributes to FUJIWARA no Tamesuke (1263-1328). The painting executed in ink and slight colour has a relaxed atmosphere. This piece is a useful material in considering the question of lineage and other problems concerning the development of the painting of “celebrated poets” in the Kamakura Period. |
