Important papers on this literary material are “On Iwasa Matabei” (Part I and II) by TANAKA, Kisaku, in Nos. 2 and 3 of Ukiyoe Shi (1929) and “A Manuscript Relating to Iwasa Matabei Owned by the Hōunji Temple in Fukui” by TSUJI, Nobuo, in No. 225 of Bijutsu Kenkyū (1962). The former clarified that this literature is no doubt by Matabei by examining it in the light of other materials on his life then known, and also theorized that this journey took place in 1637. The latter pointed out that the version of this record a part of which (fig. 1) was reproduced in Echizen Jimbutsu Shi by FUKUDA, Genzaburō, (2 vols., Tokyo, 1910) is most likely by Matabei's own hand judging from his authenticated autographs. Although TSUJI could not locate the manuscript, he, in the same paper, reported that the manuscript was added to the collection of Charles J. MORSE through an art dealer in Chicago named Mori around 1927. HARUYAMA, Takematsu's paper “Participation to the Controversy on Matabei” in Studies of Aesthetics and Art History in Memory of the Sixtieth Birthday of Dr. Ōtsuka (1931) stated that the manuscript seemed to have been brought to the States. However, the present location of the manuscript is not known.
The fact that the version printed in Kokka includes miscopied portions and skipped portions which are more neatly included in the version of the Historiographical Institute indicates that the Kokka version was not the original by Matabei himself. On the other hand, the fact that the photo reproduction in Echizen Jimbutsu Shi and the version of the Historiographical Institute show some textual differences makes it impossible to presume that the version on which the latter was based was Matabei's original. However, there are traces of collation in the manuscript of the Institute and the possibility remains that the version used for the collation was of his original hand. The facts which support this possibility are: that the manuscript introduced in Echizen Jimbutsu Shi is explained as being owned by SAITŌ Ritsudō; that the manuscript in the Institute has a colophon which indicates that the transcription was finished in the same month of the same year as the publication of Echizen Jimbutsu Shi and that the copy was based on a manuscript owned by SAITŌ Ritsudō. That means, it is quite likely that the transcriber could use Matabei's original owned by SAITŌ Ritsudō for the purpose of collation. Then, why he did not transcribe Matabei's original itself becomes a question. 内容記述 | Kaikoku Michi no Ki is a travel record by IWASA, Matabei, (1578-1650) written when he traveled from Fukui to Edo via Kyoto. The present author puts the transcribed copy of this travel record owned by the Historiographical Institute of the University of Tokyo in print. The literature was first introduced by SAITŌ, Ritsudō, when he published the entire text in Nos. 107 and 108 of Kokka in 1898.
