内容記述 | Heretofore, three scrolls which belonged to a set of handscroll paintings of the Heiji War story have been known, namely, one in Tokyo National Museum, one in the Seikadō Foundation and one in the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. The Illustrated Handscrolls of the Heiji War is a very valuable work as a masterpiece of Kamakura Period handscroll paintings which deal with historical war stories. And here another illustrated handscroll segment of the same story is introduced. This segment contains five text portions and five corresponding illustrations. A part of the first text portion is missing, but the rest of the scroll is rather well preserved. While the above mentioned three scrolls are from the first onethird of the Story of the Heiji War, this piece belongs to the very end of the story, the part in which a lady-in-waiting known as Tokiwa flees with her children to the Yamato District and spends one night at a house of a generous woman. In the scroll in question, the story starts with the departure of Tokiwa's company from this house. Then they go back to Kyoto to get leave from the imperial consort and proceed to the mansion of TAIRA no Kiyomori, an influential nobleman. After this, other events are depicted. As the result of an unfortunate accident between the ex-emperor and the emperor, the exemperor arrests FUJIWARA no Tsunemune and FUJIWARA no Korekata who were his vassals. On the other hand, MINAMOTO no Yoritomo, who has been jailed, is being exiled to Izu and visits a nun who saved his life in order to express his gratitude. The above mentioned plot and the nature of the text in this scroll does not show a direct genealogical relationship with any of the existing unillustrated versions. If one compares it with the above mentioned illustrated scrolls, the illustrations have some features in common, but the painting style, calligraphy style and the type of text are different from those of the three scrolls. As for the date of the present scroll, the author presumes it to be around the Bun-ei (126475) and Kōan (1278–88) Eras based on comparison with other painted scrolls. Thus, the author considers that it is a part of a rather voluminous set which is different from the well-known three illustrated scrolls. |
