内容記述 | A set of five hanging scrolls representing Five Great Vidyārājas was recovered in the Kiburuji in Ōno Town, Gifu Prefecture, about ten years ago and became noted as a complete set of Five-Vidyārāja paintings of the type introduced by Priest Enchin from China. A few years later, a dedicatory inscription dated the second year of Kanji Era (1088) was found on the back of the picture of Trailokyavijaya, one of the Vidyārājas. The inscription is significant for the chronological position it assigns this work. The stylistic questions of the set were discussed by the present author in No. 293 of the Bijutsu Kenkyu. After that, during the repairs of this set which were carried out last year, another dedicatory inscription, dated the fourth year of Kanji Era (1090), was found on the back of the picture of Kuṇḍalī. The above mentioned inscriptions indicate that these two scrolls were not made at the same time, and their styles also show that they were not painted by the same artist. Other scrolls in the set, too, show similar but individual styles. It may therefore be the case that pictures which were executed separately for independent rituals were later assembled. The place of the inscriptions and the way they are written are different. |
