Mr. Kenjirō KUMAMOTO, in his paper “Goseda Yoshimatsu” in No. 213 of this journal, mentioned that GOSEDA\u0027s work titled “La Robe de la Poupée” seems to have been exhibited in the Salon of the spring of 1883, quoting a letter from Yoshimatsu to his father Hōryū. The painting now in question is perhaps this work.\n Yoshimatsu GOSEDA (1855-1915) learned Western painting methods from Charles WIRGMAN (1832-91), an illustrator of the Illustrated London News in Yokohama, starting in 1866. He entered the Kōbu Bijutsu Gakkō, the first Japanese art school which taught Western art methods, and studied for a short period in 1876 under Antonio FONTANESI (1818-82). He then went to France in 1880 and studied under Léon Joseph Florentine BONNA (1833-1922) who was famous as a portrait painter. In 1887 he moved to England and then to the United States in December of the same year. He returned to Japan in April 1889. Rather many works he painted during this trip to Europe and America remain, including “Puppet Show” (1883 : owned by Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music) which is an excellent piece for Japanese oil painting in the 1880\u0027s. The work with which we are concerned is more than comparable to it in its degree of perfection.\n According to memoirs by Kokki MIYAKE(1874 -1954), a water-colour painter of the Meiji Era, it seems that this work was once hung in the Shiba Villa of Marquis HACHISUKA.
