It is a cover of purple paper detached from its text portion and has a cover painting of landscape on its outside and a frontispiece representing scenes related to the contents of the sutra on its inside. The title of the sutra and the volume number are written in gold on the outside. It is the cover of the fifth volume of a Lotus Sutra manuscript.\n The landscape cover painting (Pls. I-a, II, III) is a purely non-narrative landscape depicting a marsh-like scene with banks and distant hills. Autumnal grasses are seen on the waterside banks and very much generalized trees appear on the distant hills. Flying birds are also seen in the distance. The entire picture is executed with silver pigment on the deep purple paper of the cover. The viewing eyes are led in a zigzag pattern from the foreground to the background along the water surface between the bank-like forms. Similar compositions are found among the landscape paintings decorating text pages and covers of the Nishihonganji Version of the Anthology of Thirty-six Poets which is presumed to be a work around the 1110\u0027s, though some of them are not necessarily marshy landscapes. Not only that, such a compositional principle is obseryable in the design of a lacquered chest owned by the Kongōbuji, which is perhaps a work of the beginning of the twelfth century. The general characteristics of this cover painting imply stylis-tic kinship with the paintings of the above mentioned Anthology of Thirty-six Poets and the Ōtagire Version of Wakan Rōei Shū, a poetry manuscript written around 1100.\n The frontispiece on the opposite side (Pl. I-b, V) is done with gold and silver pigments. Buddha and two attending Bodhisattvas are represented in the upper part of the composition and two scenes related to the contents of Vol. V of the eight-volume Lotus Sutra set are depicted in the lower half. A landscape-like setting with rocks, trees, grasses and distant mountains is shared by these scenes. The author compares the treatment of the lotus petals depicted in the air in this frontispiece with those in other Late Heian Period art works, including the work shown in Pl. VI.\nThis comparison and the analysis of the other stylistic characteristics of the cover painting and the frontispiece lead him to take the views that this piece must be a work from the period between the very end of the eleventh century and about 1125, and most probably falls between 1100 and 1120.\n The author at the same time points out that there is a sutra scroll (fig. 5, 6) which has a cover of exactly the same kind of design and style and a text written in ink on white paper. The cover of this scroll is of Kanfugenkyō (Kuanp\u0027u-hsien-ching), a sutra which was often copied with the Lotus Sutra, and the text portion is of Vol. V of a eight-volume set of the Lotus Sutra. 内容記述 | The remaining examples of Heian Period small-size landscape paintings are very few. The author here introduces and discusses a Lotus Sutra scroll cover in the collection of Mr. Yukio YASHIRO, the founder of this institute, as a valuable and rare example of this kind of work. It is a cover of purple paper detached from its text portion and has a cover painting of landscape on its outside and a frontispiece representing scenes related to the contents of the sutra on its inside. The title of the sutra and the volume number are written in gold on the outside. It is the cover of the fifth volume of a Lotus Sutra manuscript. The landscape cover painting (Pls. Similar compositions are found among the landscape paintings decorating text pages and covers of the Nishihonganji Version of the Anthology of Thirty-six Poets which is presumed to be a work around the 1110's, though some of them are not necessarily marshy landscapes. Not only that, such a compositional principle is obseryable in the design of a lacquered chest owned by the Kongōbuji, which is perhaps a work of the beginning of the twelfth century. The general characteristics of this cover painting imply stylis-tic kinship with the paintings of the above mentioned Anthology of Thirty-six Poets and the Ōtagire Version of Wakan Rōei Shū, a poetry manuscript written around 1100. The frontispiece on the opposite side (Pl. VI. This comparison and the analysis of the other stylistic characteristics of the cover painting and the frontispiece lead him to take the views that this piece must be a work from the period between the very end of the eleventh century and about 1125, and most probably falls between 1100 and 1120. The author at the same time points out that there is a sutra scroll (fig. 5, 6) which has a cover of exactly the same kind of design and style and a text written in ink on white paper. The cover of this scroll is of Kanfugenkyō (Kuanp'u-hsien-ching), a sutra which was often copied with the Lotus Sutra, and the text portion is of Vol. V of a eight-volume set of the Lotus Sutra. The author thinks that the cover in Mr. Yashiro's collection and this work belonged to the same sutra set and therefore that the cover in Mr. Yashiro's collection was originally attached to the text portion of the latter. |
