According to an old document, a copy of the Dutch translation of this book was dedicated to the Shogunate family from a Dutch person in 1663, three years after the Dutch translation was published. But Gennai HIRAGA (1726-1779), a scientist and painter, claimed in his writing that the copy he purchased at great cost in 1768 was the first copy used by painters. The lion forms illustrated in this book were used as models by painters of the late Edo Period for such works as “Lion” by Shiseki SŌ, several illustrations in a painting manual Kokon Gasō by the same artist, “Lion” by Naotake ODANO, and an etching by Kōkan SHIBA, “Landscape with a Lion.” It occurred also in the field of pottery. Namely, a piece of Banko ware owned by Kobe City Museum of Namban Art has a glaze painting of a lion design derived from this book.\n The illustrations of the first issue of this book in Latin, published in Frankfurt (1650–53), were etched by Mattheus MERIAN, the Younger. The Duch edition records no etcher\u0027s name of the illustrations, many of which have reversed compositions. However, it seems that they were reprinted by the same etcher. The source for the forms of the lions and lionesses in this book seems to be drawings by Peter Paul RUBENS. Not only that, the lions in an anonymous etching “Daniel in the Lions\u0027 Den” (Pl. VII) are based on these drawings, and some works, such as “Paradise,” by Jan BRUEGHEL I who often worked together with RUBENS, use the forms of the lions and the lionesses in the above mentioned drawings. Similar lion forms are also found in an etching made by W. HOLLAR in 1646 (Pl. VIII-a) and in the set of etchings by A. BLOOTELING, “Variae Leonum Icones (Various Figures of Lions)” (Pl. VIII-b).
