Its main parts, namely, head and body are carved out of one block of kaya wood. After carving these main parts, the block was split into front half and back half vertically just behind the ears and the inside of the image was hollowed and then they were assembled again. The arms and the feet were made of separate blocks of wood and added to the body. The height is 230.3 cm. Inside this Image is an inscription in black ink telling that it was carved by Buddhist sculptor, Kenkō, by the order the people of the MUTOBE Family and the TACHIBANA Family in the eighth year of Kenchō Era (1256). It shows a typical sculp tural tradition of the Eastern Japan of the day in that both its voluminous body and masculine face are finished plain without colouring or guild ing. It is known that two other works, both in the same pefecture, are the works by Kenko. One is the seated image of Bhaisajyaguru of the Raifukuji in Imba-gun, Chiba Prefebture, which has an inscription in ink stating that it was made by Kenko in the eighth year of Kōan Era (1285). This image, 48.5 cm in height shows the stylistic development of Kenkō. The other example is the group of statues of Vaiśravaṇa and two attendants, Mahāśrī and a deity in form of boy, at the Tamon-in in the town of Inzaimachi. The main image, Vaiśravaṇa, is 174.8 cm in height including the goblin under the feet of the image. Mahāsrī measures 100 cm and the boy figure, 96 cm. This group of statues is made of kaya wood as well as the above-mentioned works of the Tempukuji and Raifukuji. The statues of the Tamon-in were painted when they were rapaired and therefore lack the original sharpness, but they show the new influence of Sung Chinese sculpture.\n It is very extraordinary that as many as five sculptural images by the same artist are known in the Eastern Japan. 内容記述 | This Avalokitesvara, the main image of the Tempukuji in Chiba City, Chiba Prefecture, is one of the most noteworthy works which the author recently investigated. Its main parts, namely, head and body are carved out of one block of kaya wood. After carving these main parts, the block was split into front half and back half vertically just behind the ears and the inside of the image was hollowed and then they were assembled again. The arms and the feet were made of separate blocks of wood and added to the body. The height is 230.3 cm.
