内容記述 | Kano Shōei (1519–1592) was the father of Kanō Eitoku, the great painter of the Momoyama Period. The son's great fame has eclipsed that of the father, but Shoei was an established artist in his own right and seems to have produced a considerable number of works. In 1536, he was commissioned to paint a Nehan (Nirvana) painting for the Daitokuji Temple, and in 1566, he painted sliding screens with his son Eitoku for the newly built Jukōin Temple. Both of these works remain to the present day. Records say that in 1572, he painted a screen for the Imperial Court, and this would seem to suggest his standing as a painter. In 1569, Shoei journeyed to the Province of Bungo (now Ōita Prefecture), at the invitation or Ōtomo Sōrin, a powerful lord of the district, and on his way, he stopped by at Itsukushima Shrine, where he was commissioned to paint the Rajōmon Oni no Zu. This work was still extant in the Meiji Perthat of the father, but Shoei was an established iod, but it was so dilapidated that it had to be destroyed. The work which we introduce here, a six-fold screen of the Nijūshiko (Twenty-Four Examp les of Filial Piety), was probably commissioned by the Shinto priest Tanamori Fusaaki, the same priest who commissioned the Itsukushima Shrine painting. Shōei's works do not have the force and dynamic quality which we find in Eitoku, but are pleasant and straightforward works, which probably reflect the painter's genial character. The present screen is a fine example of the artist's style. |
