内容記述 | From the analysis of its text and pictures, a set of the three scrolls og the Tenjin Engi Emaki in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York may be dated late thirteenth century. The Metrololitan version is unique among the extant extnat Tenjin Engi scrolls in that it has separate scroll (Scroll “C”) devoted entirely to a comprehensive description of Nichizō's tour of Hell, which is represented only briefly in two or three scenes in other versions. The text of this particular episode in the Metropolitan's scroll is based on the “Dōken-shōnin Meido-ki”, A Record of the Priest Doken's (Nichizo's) Tour of Hell. The rest of the scrolls follow a standard format, and both its text and pictures belong to Group A, whose prototype is the famous Shōkyū version of the early thirteenth century. In the first seven episodes, the Metropolitan's text closely follows the Shōkyū scrolls, but from the eighth episode it resembles later version in the same group, the Egara scrolls of 1319. For this reason, an attempt is made in this article to correlate the Metropolitan's text with that of the Egara version, rather than with the Shōkyū scrolls. The pictures of the Metropolitan's scrolls, however, bear little relationship to the Egara scrolls. In spite of the extremely simplified compositions, the scenes in the Metropolitan's scrolls are similar to those in the Shōkyū scrolls, and it is possible that later versions such as the Sugitani and Sugō of 1419 and 1427 have developed out of a yet unknown version influenced by the Metropolitan's scrolls. The text of the work concerned collated by the present author will be published in a later number of this journal. |
