D.), was given as a farewell gift on his departure for home in the following year by high ranking officials and men of letters, all residents of Ningpot 寧波.
The scroll begins with the prologue by Yang Shou-chih 楊守阯 and ends with the epilogue by Fang Shih 方仕. In between are parting poems composed by 12 persons ―― Ni Fu 倪復, T'u Yung 屠滽, Tung Yüeh 董鑰, Wei Ch’êng 魏偁, Fang Chih 方誌, Lu Ch’êng 陸偁, Yang Shou-sui 楊守隨, Chang Ping 張昺, Chin Hung 金洪, Yüan Meng-t'i 袁孟悌, Sung Ssu 宋似, and Fang Lin 方霖, and the farewell painting by Wang Ê 王諤, a court painter. Each of the poems by 12 poets praises Nagaharu for his sincerity of coming all the way to Ming across the rough seas to pay his respects to the Ming Dynasty, narrates how he enjoyed the special favor of the emperor of the Ming Dynasty and expresses regret at parting while sympathizing with Nagaharu who may suffer hardships during his voyage home. The farewell painting by Wang Ê (alias T'ing-chih 廷直, nom de plume Tung-yüan 東原) is an ink painting portrayed with rapid strokes yet displaying his masterly skill (Pl. I). It shows two men standing on a cliff to give a warm send-off to a departing ship. Both the prologue and the epilo gue eulogize Nagaharu for his noble character and describe how the scroll of farewell poems and painting was made.
The “Dai-Nihon-Shi-Ryô” 大日本史料 published by the Historical Materials Compilation Institute of Tokyo University, in its column devoted to the events in the sixth year of Eishô, tells of the despatch of Nagaharu to Ming by quoting the “Sôhôkaku Shoga Meishin-Roku” 漱芳閣書畫銘心錄, written by Asano Baidô 淺野梅堂, a scholar in the end of the Edo Era, which reproduced all the poems from the original scroll. The description of Baidô is a little different from the actual condition of this scroll, but it was Baidô's mistake in course of the compilation, and it may be said that the scroll has maintained its original form.
Looking for similar articles, there is one already widely known in art circles-a hanging scroll of parting poems and painting which was given to a priest as à parting gift on his departure for home after years of study in Sung (The Bijutsu Kenkyu No. 4). This priest is believed to be Shunjô 俊芿, the founder of the Sennyûji Temple. There are also a number of parting poems and paintings given Sakugen 策彥 of the Tenryûji Temple, who visited Ming twice during the Tenmon Era (1532~1554), on his departure for home. Among the paintings given to Sakugen there is a ink apinting by Wang Ê (Pl. II).
