内容記述 | The present writer has written “Old Buddhist Statues in Northeastern Japan” for the Bijutsu Kenkyû, in which article, however, he did not refer to the statues existing at the Chûson-ji Temple in Iwate which occupy the most important position in the history of Buddhist sculpture in the Tôhoku District (north-eastern Japan). It was because he believed that the situation of the statues in the Chûson-ji could not be established until thorough consideration had been given to examples in the same area from the contemporary epoch as well as from the following Kamakura Period. Sculptural activity at the Chûson-ji began already during the first half of the twelfth century. Statues in the same area, including those which were produced concurrently with the Chûson-ji statues, can be roughly classified into the following three groups: 1 Those from the twelfth century which, though revealing in general the style of the Fujiwara Period, do not yet evidence influence of the Jôchô style and show the mode prior to that of Jôchô. These are mostly made in the ichiboku (“single wood-block”) method and the materials used for them are chiefly katsura and hô wood. 2 Those in the Jôchô style, chiefly in the Chûson-ji. Technically they are more often in the yosegi (“joined wood-blocks”) method. Hinoki wood begins to be used. 3 Those which were produced under the influence of the new style adopted at the Chûson-ji. Some are entirely in the new style but some others are a mixture of the new style with local style. The yosegi method is in more frequent use, and the materials are chiefly kaya, katsura and harunire wood. The present chapter discusses the style and examples of the first-mentioned of these three groups. In the next chapter to be given in the next issue the writer wishes to introduce previous theories as well as his own interpretation concerning the statues in the Chûson-ji. He will further discuss how these statues influenced upon sculpture in this area, and how sculpture in this area developed during the following Kamakura Period. |
