内容記述 | The painting showing two women drawing water from a well, reproduced in Plate I, has heretofore been identified as a surviving segment of Chiyono Sôshi Emaki (Illustrated Scroll of the Story about Chiyono) based upon the legen- dary tale concerning a woman named Chiyono (who, after being ordained into Zen Buddhism, was called the Nun Nyodai). The present writer, however, having studied the text of Obusuma Saburô Emaki (Illustrated Scroll of Stories about Obusuma Saburô) in the Asano Collection, con- cludes that it is a segment from that scroll. The segment under discussion is the sixth section of the Obusuma Saburô scroll. The story goes as follows. Jihi, daughter of Yoshimi Jirô (elder brother of Obusuma Saburô), was after her father's death treated cruelly by Saburô and his wife. To draw water day and night for Saburô's many horses was a hard labor imposed upon her. Her mother was worried about the girl's hardships and secretly helped her during nights. The girl in this painting is clad in poor clothing, which the present writer identifies with the one described in the text of the Obusuma Saburô Emaki, with reference also to corresponding literary sources as well as to similar examples found in other scroll-paintings. It can be guessed, from the facsimile of the Obusuma Saburô Emaki existing in the Maeda Sonkyôkaku Library, that this segment was separated from the original scroll prior to 1685~1709. The writer's study has added one scene, which had been missing, to the Obusuma Saburô Emaki, a famous scroll-painting ascribed to the end of the thirteenth or the beginning of the fourteenth century. |
