内容記述 | The Tale of Genji with Black and White Illustrations in the Tokugawa Museum (the Reimeikai Foudation) consists of parts of the chapter of Ukifune and Kagerō. These 34 sheets of text and illustration are no doubt from the same book as those parts of the chapter of Ukifune owned by the Museum Yamato Bunka-kan. The author who discussed the Yamato Bunka-kan Text in Vol. 17 of the Yamato Bunka in 1955, here takes up chiefly the Tokuga Collection Text. This book is important material for the study of the history of literery appreciation and the influence exerted by the Tale of Genji, as well as being important for art historical studies. In the writer's opinion, this beautifully designed book is not a common manuscript but must been a book specially made to be cherished by some court lady. Although it lacks some parts of the text it is still very valuable in clarifying considerable evidence in the transformation and variants of the text of the Tale of Genji. And here we should note that this is not an example of the Aobyōshi-bon Family or Kawachi-bon Family of the text classifications of the Genji Monogatari but of the so called Beppon or Kohon (Older Version) Family. The author first discusses the differences with other texts of the three families (18 kinds for Ukifune and 17 kinds for Kagerō) collected in the “Volume of Collated Works” of Genji Monogatari Taisei (Comprehensive Study of the Tale of Genji) by Dr. IKEDA, Kikan. Among these, there are questions having to do with the reasons for and the background of the variants, for instance, the way the court ladies enjoyed them. The entire existing text of this book owned by the Museum Yamato Bunka-kan and the Tokugawa Museum is appended at the end of this article. |
