内容記述 | Regarding OGIHARA, Morie (1879–1900), as a pioneer in Japanese modern sculpture, the author has continued a study of his life and works for several years. He intends to publish its results in the following issues of the Bijutsu Kenkyu. In this introduction the author discusses OGIHARA's historical position and the artistic circumstances in which his art was formed. Especially he emphasizes Auguste Rodin's influence on OGIHARA. Already the author, in the Bijutsu Kenkyu, No. 163, has mentioned the deep impression made by Rodin's works on young Japanese artists at the beginning of the twentieth century ―― for instance on TAKAMURA, Kōtarō (1883–1965) and NAKAHARA, Teijirō (1881–1921). After he returned home in 1908, he presented revolutionary works in exhibitions and wrote many essays on art in magagines and newspapers to encourage the modern artistic spirit. But unfortunately these energetic activities ended in vain two years later, in 1910, at his sudden death in his thirtieth year. Therefore his art, in his day, did not get accepted by the public or even by creative artists except for a few followers. But he left monuments behind him, and his historical importance is considerable. In the study of this gifted artist, the author gives a special importance to the collection of his essays, Chōkoku Shinzui, which was compiled by his friends after his death and published in 1911. | |||||
