Since writing the article, I made two surveys of the Buddhist statues in the Ganjōjuin Temple and was led to infer that the two figures flanking the Fudō Myōō, that is to say, the figures of Seitaka and Kongara, also enclosed tablets. To verify my suspicion, I took X-ray photographs of the two statues and found that both statues contained inscriptive wooden tablets in the same tōba (stupa) form as those found earlier in the statues of Fudō and Bishamon (fig. 3), as can be seen in the illustrations and explanatory diagrams (fig. 1 and 2). 内容記述 | In my previous article, “Buddhist Statues in the Jōrakuji Temple and Unkei,” published in No. 204 of The Journal of Art Studies, I pointed out that a comparison of the Fudō (Acala) and Bishamon (Vaisravana) statues owned by the Ganjōjuin, with the Fudo and Bishamon statues of Jōrakuji, attributed to Unkei, would seem to show that the two former statues are also the works of the same sculptor. 1 and 2). The results from the two surveys are given in the present article. The statue of Seitaka-dōji (Pl. V) is 83 centimetres in height. With left foot thrust forward and left arm bent, the figure stands in a forward bending pose on a rock. The statue is covered with colouring from a later period, but even so, one senses the powerful and skilful artistry of the sculptor. It is of Yosegi wood with rock crystal eyes. The arms are made of separate blocks of wood. The hollow of the statue contains a wooden tablet in the shape of a tōba. It is not possible to decipher the writing from the the X-ray photograph, but the words are probably similar to the words inscribed on the two earlier tablets in the temple. The Kongara-dōji statue (Pl. VI) is 76.5 centimetres in height, with hair falling to the shoulders and down the back. The right arm is bent as if it held something. The figure is rounded and the folds of the drapery show the same skill as that seen in the statue of Seitaka. This statue of Kongara is also covered with colouring from a later period and it also contains a wooden tablet in the hollow of its frame. The fact that these statues both contain tablets which are the same in form as the two earlier tablets in the possession of the temple seem to point to a common origin. According to records of the Edo Period, the statues of Fudō and Bishamon contained the earlier tablets which state that Unkei made the statues in the second year of Bunji (1186 A. D.). The discovery of two more tablets may mean that the statues which contain them are also from the hand of Unkei. |
