内容記述 | These two hanging scrolls, “Fish and Water Plants”, were hitherto vaguely attributed to the Sung or Yüan dynasties. But a close look reveals that the inscription on the painting is by one, Pien Jung 卞栄 (1419-1487), a literary man of the mid-Ming dynasty. Moreover, copies of these paintings made by Kanō Shunko 狩野春湖 (d. 1726), are now owned by the Tokyo National Museum and Kanō Shunko, on space of these copies, states that the original painter was Liu Chieht 劉節. Turning to the original works, we find that the seals are indecipherable, but an X-ray photograph shows that one seal can be read as Liu Chieh. This Liu Chieh was a court painter of the Ming dynasty from An-ch'êng 安成 of Chiang-hsi 江西 whose name is recorded in biographies of painters as a painter of fish. Mr. Osvald Sirén erroneously states that Liu Chieh is a painter from An-ch'êng of Honan 河南 (Chinese Painting, Ⅶ, p. 211). According to the inquiry made into the lives of his father and grandfather and that of Pien Jung, we may surmise that the present works were painted in the seventies or eighties of the fifteenth century. Fish and Water Plants paintings of a similar type are not uncommon in Japan but nothing is known of the real painters and the actual dates of these works. The fact we have been able to ascertain the period and painter of these two scrolls should serve as a pointer in further studies of works of the same genre. The writer of this article will pursue the subject further in his future research. |
