内容記述 | Of numerous stone Buddhist images existing in Japan, the only example known heretofore dating back to the Hakuhō (Early Nara) Period is the triad in relief on a stone owned by the Ishi-i Monastery in Yamato (Nara Prefecture). This fact should not be interpreted as meaning that only a few stone images were made in this period due to the shortage of the suitable material or to the technical difficulties involved in stone carving; it should rather be considered that stone statues were liable to be damaged or worn away, and that once damaged or worn away they were neglected and thrown away. We had believed that detailed inspections through neglected localities would bring forth more specimens. Our belief came to a reality. In January 1955, thanks to a lucky opportunity, we found one on the mountainside at Furubokko in Kasai County, Harima Province (Hyōgo Prefecture). Unfortunately the stone with relief images of a triad had been much damaged and defaced due to fire which had burned the building housing it, but from its detailed parts we could easily tell that it was the oldest and finest example of stone sculpture in this country. Moreover, later discovery of a stone model of a roof proved that the roof and the upright stone with the images originally constituted a Zushi (miniature te nple) in the manner like that of the famous Tamamushi Zushi of the Hōryū-ji Monastery in Nara. We have thereafter studied about the origin of the style of this specimen and about the place where it was carved. We noticed that its style is most like that of the stone Buddhist images at the Pao-tu-ssŭ in China, and hence we judged it to be dating from the Hakuhō Period, in which Japanese sculpture was under the influence of Early T'ang Period of China. Its material was judged by an expert of that locality to be stone from Mt. Furubokke, leading to the conclusion that the images were carved in this mountain. With a belief that somewhere in this area, now in a state of complete devastiaton, there must have been a building which contained the stone Zushi, we searched all around the place with success. We finally detected a site, on a level ground about 300 metres west of the location, where ancient roof tiles were found scattered. Our researches on the stone Buddhist images have just begun, but we wished to report the existence of this important specimen which had been left forgotten over many centuries in this sequestered region of Harima Province. |
