内容記述 | A series of many experiments has proved that X-ray researches on sculpture are very effective in bringing out a lot of discoveries about the constructions hitherto unknown of statues. Our experience encouraged us to continue our work in the year 1951 on famous masterpieces of Japanese sculpture representative of respective periods and techniques. The pieces we tried were, for the sake of convenience, such statues deposited in the National Museum, as follows: Subhuti, dry-lacquer, from Kōfukuji Temple, Nara; Candra-prabha, dry-lacquer, in the National Museum collection; Four Buddhas and Mahasri, dry-lacquer, from the Saidaiji Temple, Nara; wooden pieces among the group of ancient statues in the Imperial Collection, known as “fourty-eight Buddhist Statues ”; Princess Nakatsu-hime, wood, from the Yakushiji Temple, Nara; Vajrapani, wood, from the Kōfukuji Temple, Nara; Mahasri, wood, from the Jōruriji Temple, Kyoto; Eight Messengers of Acala, wood, from the Kongōbuji Temple, Wakayama ; Bhaisajya-guru, wood, from the Kōfukuji Temple; Manjusri, papier-mache, from the Chūgūji Temple, Nara; Avalokitesvara with Willow, presumed to date from late in the Sung Dynasty, China ; and two other pieces. Studies on these statues led to the discovery of various informations which had been unknown in Japanese art history. One of the most important discoveries was that in the dry-lacquer statues of Candra-prabna in the Museum collection and the Four Buddhas and Mahasri from the Saidaiji, all dating from the Late Nara Period (710-793), we noticed a statuary technique which may be taken as the original type of the yosegi or “assembled blocks” technique of wooden sculpture that prevailed in the Late Heian Period (897-1184). |
