内容記述 | For the preservation of the wall-paintings in the Main Hall (Kon-dō) of the Hōryūji Monastery, Nara, the Committee for the Studies of Methods for the Preservation of Hōryūji Murals organized in 1920 made researches of scientific measures for the protection and preservation of the precious wall-paintings. The studies were later transmitted under the charge of the Office for Preservation of National Treasures in the Hōryūji organized in 1934, under which the repair works of the ancient buildings of the monastery had a good progress. For the preservation of the wall-paintings which was the most difficult part of the whole scheme the Society for Researches of Hōryūji Murals was established in 1939. It consisted of three sections, the First Section for architectural researches, the Second Section for physical and chemical researches, and the Third Section for researches relating to art history. Side by side with these research activities it was widely hoped to make copies of the aged murals to provide against possible emergency in future, so it was decided to copy them on the spot in original sizes and original colour. Owing to the outbreak of World War II these works had to be suspended or barely maintained until a few years after the end of the war. After repeated conferences the copying work was commissioned to several leading painters, who began their work in autumn of 1940 under fluorescent light. On January 26th, 1949 a fire broke out inside the Main Hall where the copying was still going on. Most of the wall-paintings and a part of the completed reproductions were lost. The fire that dealt a fatal blow on the precious murals seems to have begun in the midnight and continued to smoulder till it was found in the morning. The temperature inside the building rose to between eight to ten hundred degrees. The surface of the walls became like that of pottery, and the pigments were almost completely discoloured. Moreover the wall surface was cracked on many spots by the tremendous water pressure of extinguishers, and there was made a large hole in the wall of Amida Paradise by a hose forced through it. It is to be noticed that some of the previously besmeared portions of the paintings became more distinct after the fire, and that the contours line engraved with a pin, the existence of which had been an object of discussions among art historians, became distinctly discernible. It was fortunate that the twenty smaller walls near the ceiling of the inner hall (naijin), with images of heavenly beings, escaped the fire as they had been removed at the time of dismantling the roof and kept in a different building. |
