Studies on these specimens are significant not only because they are works of high artistic value, but also because they later evolved the Li Dynasty style which influenced greatly on “recent-age” Japanese lacquer art. The writer wishes to give outline informations on the works known heretofore, and hopes for discovery of more specimens which at present are so few. \nExcavated specimens : \n(1) Black-lacquered box with scattered chrysanthemum designs in nacre and tortoise shell inlay. Collection of the former Li Royal Museum, Korea. (Fig. 1) The designs on this box are done in inlay of nacre and twisted brass wire as well as of tortoise-shell pieces under which are colour paintings. It is among the oldest of existing specimens, fine both in depiction and in the inlay technique. \n(2) Black-lacquered tray with a set of covered boxes. Owner same as above. (Fig. 2,3) This is a tray containing a small square box, a six-lobed box of a floral shape, and four boxes of irregular shape called suhama (sand-bars) around these two. It is a rare and valuable specimen of the sort. \n(3) Black-lacquered oil pot with chrysanthemum scroll design in nacre inlay. Owner same as above. (Fig. 4) \n(4) Black-lacquered incense box with design of plants and water fowl in nacre inlay and gold paint. Owner same as above. (Fig. 5) This last-mentioned is made probably of “dry-lacquer,” that is, made of many layers of hemp cloth cemented with lacquer. It is a rare example with a graphic design like a landscape painting. \n“Preserved” specimens existing in Japan :\n(Translator\u0027s note : “Preserved” here is a literal translation of the Japanese term densei. It means an object not excavated but preserved since long before.) \n(1) Sūtra box with chrysanthemum spray design in nacre inlay. Collection of the Tokyo National Museum. (Pl. Ⅱ) This seems to have been one of a set of boxes for the Kegon Sūtra, as its cover has a title-piece reading “Dai-hōkō-butsu Kegon-kyō.” History of the Koryō Dynasty tells that in the thirteenth year of the reign of Emperor Won Jong (1272) the empress ordered to collect wood-block printed sūtra copies, and that a “superintendent for making nacre-inlay boxes” was nominated. Presumably the present box dates from about that time. \n(2) Black-lacquered rosary box with nacre and tortoise-shell inlay. Owned by the monastery Taima-dera, Nara. (Fig. 6) The box is decorated with inlay of nacre and of twisted wire of tin and brass, as well as with colour painting under translucent tortoise-shell. It is in good state of preservation retaining the colourful, elaborate ornamentation. It is from the twelfth century at the latest. \n(3) Black-lacquered suhama shape box with cover, with chrysanthemum scroll design in nacre and tortoise-shell inlay. Owned by the monastery Keishun-in, Kyoto. (Fig. 7) This is similar to the suhama shape boxes excavated from a Koryö tomb (excavated specimens No. 2), but the present piece is a “preserved ” specimen. Its decoration in inlay of nacre, twisted brass wire and tortoise-shell, under the last-mentioned of which are red and yellow painted designs, is very beautiful. Its age is later than the excavated piece. \n(4) Small box with chrysanthemum scroll design in nacre inlay. Collection of the Ōkura Shūko-kan Museum, Tokyo. (Fig. 8)\nMade of wood and dry-lacquer, this box is ornamented with inlay of nacre and of twisted wire and long, narrow strips of silver, done in skilful workmanship. It was made probably in the twelfth century. \n(5) Black-lacquered sūtra box with chrysanthemum scroll design in nacre inlay. Collection of the Reimei-kai Foundation, Tokyo. (Fig. 9) This is an elaborate work of the late Koryö period, presenting fine designs in inlay of nacre and of twisted wire and strips of metal. \n(6) Black-lacquered sūtra box with peony scroll design in nacre inlay. Formerly in the collection of Mr. NAKAMURA Gashin, Nara. (Pl. Ⅲ) This is similar in technique to the preceding box and more elaborate in the manner of inlay work. In age, too, it is about the same as above. \n(7) Black-lacquered writing-set box with peony scroll design in nacre inlay. Collection of the Tokyo National Museum. 内容記述 | Korean works of lacquer art of the Koryö Dynasty came to attract attention of lacquer experts in about 1923, and there have been introduced some of its specimens since.
