内容記述 | This is an attempt to draw a conclusion on the dates of some of Yūshō's works from researches of his existing specimens, chiefly the wall and screen paintings in the Kennin-ji Temple, Kyoto. The only works of Kaihō Yūshō (1533-1615) of which the dates of execution are definitely known, are the Landscape Screens dating from 1602, and the Screens of the Eight Sages in Drink (Inchu Hassen) done in the same year, those of all others being obscure. Among the wall and screen paintings in the Kennin-ji, the pictures on the sliding-screens of the Daichū-in, a smaller temple belonging to the Kennin-ji, appear to have been executed around 1606 when the temple was built. However, if this assumption be right, it is doubtful whether they were really done by Yūshō, for the style of those paintings does not agree with that of Yūshō in that period. Probably it is more reasonable to attribute them to some follower of his style. The sliding screens of the Priests' Living Quarters (Hōjō) of the Kennin-ji are presumed to have been painted during the Bunroku Era (1592-,95), when that building was transferred from the Ankokuji Temple in Aki Province (Hiroshima Prefecture) by Ekei, priest of Ankoku-ji. But there is no literary record to confirm the theory; the relation between Ekei and the Kennin-ji, too, seems to be somewhat questionable. The only clue to suggest the date of their execution is the style of those paintings, which, by a comparative study with that of the “Inchū Hassen” screens, is ascribed to the early part of the Keicho Era (1596-1614). The folding screens of “Kin-ki Shoga” (“Music, Indoor Pastime, Learning and Art,” the four accomplishments as qualifications of respectability) owned by the Reito-in, another temple attached to the Kennin-ji, are presumed to date approximately from the same time as the “Inchū Hassen” screens. The Dragon and Cloud Screeens in the Kitano Jinja (shrine), Kyoto, are older than the sliding-screens of the Kennin-ji Hōjō. Most likely they date from the Tenshō Era (1573-91) like the group of folding screens in the Myōshin-ji Temple, Kyoto. The Landscape Screens in the Fujii Collection can safely be ascribed to the same period as the Hōjō screens, or early in the Keichō Era. The wall and sliding-screen paintings in the Reitō-in are older than those of the Hōjō, and even older than the Myōshin-ji screens, as is suggested by the style of figure depiction. The screens of the Zengo-an Temple in the Kennin-ji are appproximately similar in age to the Inchū Hassen Screens, probably around 1602. |
