内容記述 | Emma seems to be Austen's greatest and most characteristic of her six works. Emma Woodhouse, a heroine in this novel who is witty, charming and utterly self-confident makes many mistakes due to the power of having rather too much her own way and her disposition to think a little too well of herself. She doesn't know the world, especially the world of other people. Therefore, she makes many mistakes. In love matters especially -for she is an obsessional yet matchmaker- Emma's failures of understanding will be numerous and spectacular. The first and most obvious victim of her incomprehension is Harriet Smith, -the overbearing Emma will delude poor Harriet into believing that three different men in succession are in love with her- the clergyman Elton, the handsome Frank Churchill and Mr. Knightley. In the first division of this work, Emma refuses Elton's proposal and in the middle chapters and near the end of the novel, in part because she has so utterly misjudged her relation to Frank, she comes to know the secret engagement between Frank and Jane Fairfax and has been intelligible about the truth. Further, in the most important scene of this work which is the crucial Box Hill episode, flirting with Frank Churchill, she is rude to the elderly Miss Bates. After that she is ashamed of her behaviour and regrets heartily. When Emma behaves foolishly, Knightley chastises her, daring speak to her with the freedom and loving candour and she is contrite. Finally she understands he is her only worthy and desirable mate and marries him. That is, Auten, the writer achieved her theme of this novel, getting the true in the genuine marital alliances through Emma's undeception and human growth. | |||||
